During a Paint Out at Land’s End in San Francisco, I wanted to paint the Monterey Pines as I had seen painted by famous artists in California, with beautiful colors of the sea as the backdrop. It turned out to be a foggy day and the shore was not visible. I had to turn my back on the waves crashing on the shore and paint the pines against the greyed down sky. The lacy patterns of the pines against the subdued sun were beautiful and for a while I forgot the fog and the shore as I painted the trees.
