This was painted not long ago just outside of the tiny Wisconsin town of El Paso. The town is tucked into one of the countless winding valleys around the Rush River, and I'd wager that there are days when the flyfishermen double the town's population. I stalked this pasture for about two weeks before waiting for the beige to begin its surrender. It is a place that foreshadows the landscapes further west. There was something about how the undulating rhythms all roll towards the well worn middle ground that creates a connectedness between the right and left of the canvas, so that no matter how far our gaze strays, there is always a way back to common ground.
