Old Town Market

Old Town Market, Buildings
Old Town Market
Old Town Market” is a Waxed Watercolor painting of the Old Town Market in Orcutt, California. I was inspired to paint the market because it is being forced to shut down after serving our little community since the 1940s. I felt it needed to be preserved before it was gone for good. This is the studio painting following a plein air study I did from my car. It was the first plein air painting I snuck out to do during the Stay at Home orders in California, so I remained in my vehicle parked across the street.

I used a combination of the wet on wet technique and wet on dry to create the soft and hard edges that carry your eye around the page from the beautiful coastal sky, to the cars driving by, to the focal point at the entrance of the market.

9”x12”, 140lb Arches Cold Press Paper with Daniel Smith Fine Watercolors. Finished with Dorland’s Wax for preservation and framed in a museum style plein air frame without glass.
